About Black Sheep Winery...

Black Sheep Winery arrived in Murphys with the 1984 harvest. Our founders Janis and David Olson crushed their first Zinfandel, with assistance from current owner and winemaker, Steve Millier. The wine was styled in a big, bold way like nobody else could do. That's what makes us Black Sheep; we're different from the rest of the flock.

In 2007 David and Janis decided to retire and ride their bicycles into the sunset, they decided to turn over the Black Sheep legacy to their good friends Steve and Liz Millier. Having been involved with Black Sheep wines from the start the Millier family are very familiar with the Black Sheep style, and are excited to carry on the tradition.

Zinfandel is the bedrock of what we're about, and we currently produce a Calaveras County and an Amador County Zinfandel.  Over the years we have expanded our offerings to include Cinsault, Cabernet Sauvignon,  Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz and our True Frog's Lily Pad line of table wines.

We welcome guests daily from 11:00 to 5:00. Come on in and sample our delicious wines!

Black Sheep Winery Tour & Tasting Notes

Brought you by WinoTripping.com

Black Sheep is a tough one for us to judge. On the one hand, it's in a great new location on Main Street, and we had a great time chatting with our pourer, Kathy... she was both enthusiastic and knowlegable. On the other hand, the tasting room is so unassuming and plain, which in many cases could be a good thing, but in this case is not such a good thing. It leaves it kind of boring, and lacking in personality. There is a fine line between quaint and boring.

But as we always say, it's not the surroundings, or even the wine itself, that creates a great wine tasting... It is the people you meet that make the experience. On that score Black Sheep is a winner.

The wines were cheap and good, with hardly any of the nine wines we tasted breaking the $20 mark. Their table wines, under the True Frog label, are good for the price, red or white for $10. The standouts were the Black Sheep Shiraz and the Fortissimo Port.
