The first phase of the cave was added to our winery in 1998 to avoid ongoing costs of barrel storage. In 2000 we tunneled through from the back side of the hill to double the cave’s size, and we expanded again in 2008. The tunneling averaged 6 to 8 feet of progress per day. The walls of the cave are reinforced with steel rods beneath 6 inches of concrete. The size of the cave is 24,000 square feet. Capacity is 7500 and we have now 4800 sixty gallon barrels. Approximately 30 Minutes.

The Cave tour was educational and fun to do - a unique experience. Tastings - both complimentary and 'charged' were relaxed and informative.
Cave tour was fantastic!! Enjoyed the wines but a bit busy & crowded
Very cute vineyard, I did the free cave tour which was informative and the barrel wine tasting very interesting.
Loved the Cave tour and explanation of barrel differences.
We had a great visit to Alexander Valley Vineyards! Great wine, and we had a very friendly & knowledgable tour guide - and LOVED the winery dog who also came along for the tour. We also loved that the tour & tasting was complementary, so we had more $ to bring bottles back home with us :)
Good welcome, nice description of history of company and storage, vinery nuances.
The cave tour and barrel tasting was a really cool experience. Wine was great! Jane, our tasting host and tour guide was very informative and hospitable. We ended up buying multiple bottles and joining the wine club! Can't wait to go back :)
We had a wonderful time tasting wine and touring the caves. Our guide was very friendly and informative.
We had reserved a cave tour and tasting. Upon arriving, we were told the tasting would be on the patio bc the caves were closed- very nonchalantly.
After starting the tasting and inquiring about the cave we were then told the caves had been closed for a week and there would be no tours. Had we known this, we would not have drove all the way to the winery.
Great tour of the vineyard, Tim was very knowledgeable and it was fun to see harvest production happening so we could learn about wine making! The wine was delicious and the lunch afterwards was yummy! Highly recommend taking the hiking tour!
Beautiful winery and grounds. Great cave tour
Beautiful place, friendly, knowledgeable staff and great tour!
Very friendly staff. Great tour and information. Very nice ambiance. Will return with others. My out of town guests (UK) were very impressed. If they had more suitcase space, they would have bought more wine!
The cave tour was great experience. Then being able to do a barrel tasting in the cave was something most wineries don't offer. The tour was informative and fun. Then we finished with the tasting room, and picking up a case of wine to go home with us. Thanks for a great experience.
the cave tour was great
We had a great experience!
Great cave tour and wine tasting. Wines are an excellent value here's
Wonderful time had by all. Great wine and fun tour.
If you want the ‘wine country experience’ without the overly commercial big money spending, look no further. Knowledgeable and friendly staff. Great wines. Beautiful scenery. No crowds!
A friend recommended this winery as one of her favorites, and it did not disappoint. The tasting and tour were both great!
We love Alexander Valley Wines. We highly recommend going with the wine and cheese pairing. Excellent experience!
Tim was an excellent guide. He was very knowledgeable and told us all about the various grapes and winemaking process. The boxed lunch afterwards was delicious. I would definitely recommend this to someone looking to learn about winemaking from start to finish.
We were greeted with a complimentary tasting. Enjoyed the also complimentary tour of the caves where their wine barrels are stored. Don’t forget to bring along your wine glasses on the tour as there was a barrel tasting as well.
We had an early morning appointment for 8 people. We were cheerfully greeted, and enjoyed a tasting of many of the AVV wines. Each couple chose to share one estate tasting and one reserve tasting, and our host did a great job of pairing the wines together to give us a good contrast of the different varieties. The wine was reasonably priced, and there were lots of varieties to choose from.
Loved being in a place that didn’t feel like it was set up to woo you. Alexander Valley knows their history and proudly shows and shares it, but isn’t pretentious. Going in to the *working* caves and seeing their evolution as they were built was really interesting, getting to do side by side French and American oak barrel tastings was super educational. One of our fave tours.
The wine cave tour was fun and our tour guide was very nice and had lots of good info to share with us. We had a very welcoming experience and good recommendations on what other stops to check out in this area.
We had a very enjoyable visit and loved the cave tour.
Nice compact tour, great tasting room, you’ll love manager Denise!
Loved the cave tour. Staff was very nice.
It was a great experience. Our tour of the caves was very nice. Wish we could have gone further into the caves. We brought our son for part of his College graduation trip and it was very enjoyable. He rated it as one of his top family vacations.
Visiting Alexander Vinyards was one of the highlights of our trip! The cave tour was a unique, interesting and fun tour! We have already recommended AV to others.
Excellent place with not only vineyards but a lot of history all over the place.
We were welcomed when we came in the door and made to feel at home. The tour was great and the wine was even better! Small group and lots of personal interaction. One of my favorite wineries.
One of the highlights of our week. Fantastic wines and fantastic service
Denise and John, in the tasting room, were welcoming and made us there was no pressure to buy their wine (although of course, that would be their wish). We particularly enjoyed John's tour; he was knowledgeable and enjoyed sharing it with us. The history is interesting. We would definitely recommend this winery.
Very accommodating...gave us a tour even though we were running late.
We thoroughly enjoyed our hike tour of AVV. Our guide, John, was fun, knowledgeable and instructive on the technology of wine grape growing and producing wines. The AVV wines we tasted along the tour were great, too!
nice guide and it was interesting walking through the cave.
