About Burgess Cellars

At almost 1000 feet far above the valley floor, a visit to Burgess Cellars starts with a panoramic view of Napa Valley. Family owned and crafting wines with mountain distinction since 1972, we look forward to sharing our story and wines with you.

Burgess Cellars has been family owned and creating wines with mountain distinction since 1972 on Howell Mountain in Napa Valley.

When our founder Tom Burgess purchased the 1870’s era winery in 1972 he established himself as a pioneer of mountain side wineries. At the time, there were only approximately 2 dozen wineries in operation in the whole of Napa Valley and he saw the potential of mountain vineyards to produce wines that evoke the French concept of terroir: that the grapes, and thus wines, should reflect the vineyard’s soil, exposure, and overall micro-climate.

Today, the second generation is building on Tom’s legacy. Brothers Steven Burgess and James Burgess took over as President and Vineyard Manager respectively. In 2013, Winemaker Kelly Woods, a UC Davis graduate, completed the new team, and together the trio has fined-tuned the vineyards and cellar to highlight mountain grapes. The new direction of the estate is taking Burgess Cellars to the pinnacle of Napa Valley wine quality.

At almost 1000 feet, far over the valley floor, we produce wines from our two estate hillside vineyards, Winery Ranch Vineyard and Haymaker Vineyard. Our hillside grapes tend to be smaller, with more concentrated flavors and tannins, varietal intensity and excellent aging properties.

A visit to Burgess Cellars begins with a panoramic vista that offers real perspective on the Napa Valley. One can see the length of the Mayacamas range, from Calistoga to the hills beyond Napa. We present our wines in our cellar, where you are surrounded by barrels. Please contact us to make a reservation. Tastings are by appointment only.

We arrived early so just walked along the main drive a little to get different views of the valley. The host did come out and not that her response was inappropriate (informing us we shouldn’t wander due to risk of injury on Working winery), but the approach could have been more hospitable. The Tasting was ok and informative, but overly verbose. Hospitality not hosts primary gift. Top Wine good.

Parking is atrocious and there is no signage. Larry was very knowledgeable during the tasting but as soon as one couple who was tasting at the same time we were wanted to sign up for the wine club we ceased to exist.

Booked for my sister's birthday and could not be happier with experience. Larry was very knowledgeable and personable. We tasted the best wine of our trip! Views were lovely although the room itself could be more cozy.

My husband and I had the most wonderful experience at Burgess Cellars. From the personal welcome with wine in the parking lot to the time Larry took to answer all of our questions and slowly enjoy each wine, we could not have asked for a more perfect visit to start our time off in Napa. The views and the wine were our favorite of our entire trip!

This was a great experience, but I was a little confused by the description of the Mountainside Tasting. I thought it would be at a separate location on the mountainside. It is in a room at the winery with a beautiful view of the valley, but only from the two seats with a window view. The wines were phenomenal as usual.

A small boutique winery in a lovely setting, up higher on the hillside than most. Knowledgeable and pleasant host, as well as very nice Cabernets. Off the beaten path, not for big groups.

The view is amazing and we were greeted on arrival by our host with the first item on the tasting menu, a Chardonnay. The tasting room is relatively small but very elegant and it is a working cellar with barrels of wine. Our host for the tasting was extremely knowledgeable and friendly and the wines were excellent. Overall well worth making a reservation and visiting.

I was not impressed. I had frequently visited Burgess 35 years ago and was looking forward to reuniting with the wine. However, I remembered the wines being much more pleasing 35 years ago than they were during this visit. Also, having to pay for a tasting after you've purchased wine is a complete turn off. We won't be back nor will we recommend Burgess to anyone.

We enjoyed our tasting at Burgess Cellars. The property is located in the hills and the setting was very scenic. The tasting room was nice and was very much along the lines of what you would expect. The barrel room is very interesting and our host did a great job of explaining the family history of Burgess Cellars to us. I would recommend Burgess Cellars to a friend or family.

We found Burgess by looking for wineries off of Silverado Trail versus Hwy 29. The reviews were spot on; great property with wonderful views. Cindy took us through the fascinating back story while she poured the wines. We thought the wines got better as we progressed to some of the flagship varietals. Would definitely go again.

While we loved the Burgess wines and the hostess was very nice, we are not a huge fan of standing at a counter for wine tasting. If we are doing a quick drop in and don't want to spend meaningful time that is fine but when we're tasting wine for purchase I prefer a casual sitting area . Having said that we did join their wine club.

Nice setting with beautiful views. We were warmly greeted by our tasting hostess. We had a very pleasant experience & loved the wines. We joined the wine club. The one suggestion would be for some chairs or stools in the tasting room. It is much more comfortable and relaxing to be able to sit while enjoying the wines.
