Our program will include four masterpieces of the string ensemble repertoire, with music that spans across the globe and ranges from the 1800s to the present day.
We open our concert with music by the contemporary American composer John Corigliano. His “Invitation au voyage” (Invitation to the Voyage) is a hauntingly beautiful setting of a poem by the French Romantic poet Charles Baudelaire, transcribed by the composer for string orchestra from the original choral work. Then it’s on to the Bohemian countryside, with the joyful “Serenade for Strings” by the Czech composer Antonin Dvorak. Next it’s up north, with the tender and epigrammatic “Romance” by Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. We conclude the concert with one of the most beloved works of all time, Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings, a virtuoso tour de force of Russian Romanticism.
About the Vintner’s Chamber Orchestra
The Vintner’s Chamber Orchestra is committed to bringing high-quality and innovative performances of the chamber orchestra repertoire to audiences throughout the North Bay. The ensemble is dynamic and flexible and presents concerts throughout Sonoma and Napa Counties in both traditional (concert hall, churches) and non-traditional (wineries, pubs, parks) spaces. Additionally, the group combines musical performance with events such as literary readings, art gallery openings, dance/theater productions, wine tastings, and wellness/meditation experiences.
Our repertoire focuses on the traditional masterworks of chamber orchestra repertoire from the 1750s to the present, while also including world music, new music, and collaborations with soloists, vocalists, and artists of all stripes.
The Vintner's Chamber Orchestra is committed to education. Highly-qualified students from Sonoma State's Department of Music are invited to join the orchestra, and the ensemble performs for elementary and middle school students throughout Sonoma County.
