About Burgess Cellars

At almost 1000 feet far above the valley floor, a visit to Burgess Cellars starts with a panoramic view of Napa Valley. Family owned and crafting wines with mountain distinction since 1972, we look forward to sharing our story and wines with you.

Burgess Cellars has been family owned and creating wines with mountain distinction since 1972 on Howell Mountain in Napa Valley.

When our founder Tom Burgess purchased the 1870’s era winery in 1972 he established himself as a pioneer of mountain side wineries. At the time, there were only approximately 2 dozen wineries in operation in the whole of Napa Valley and he saw the potential of mountain vineyards to produce wines that evoke the French concept of terroir: that the grapes, and thus wines, should reflect the vineyard’s soil, exposure, and overall micro-climate.

Today, the second generation is building on Tom’s legacy. Brothers Steven Burgess and James Burgess took over as President and Vineyard Manager respectively. In 2013, Winemaker Kelly Woods, a UC Davis graduate, completed the new team, and together the trio has fined-tuned the vineyards and cellar to highlight mountain grapes. The new direction of the estate is taking Burgess Cellars to the pinnacle of Napa Valley wine quality.

At almost 1000 feet, far over the valley floor, we produce wines from our two estate hillside vineyards, Winery Ranch Vineyard and Haymaker Vineyard. Our hillside grapes tend to be smaller, with more concentrated flavors and tannins, varietal intensity and excellent aging properties.

A visit to Burgess Cellars begins with a panoramic vista that offers real perspective on the Napa Valley. One can see the length of the Mayacamas range, from Calistoga to the hills beyond Napa. We present our wines in our cellar, where you are surrounded by barrels. Tastings are by appointment only.

*This is an active working winery. WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND NOT BRINGING CHILDREN TO OUR PROPERTY. Pets are not permitted.

A beautiful setting with a fantastic view of the valley. Delicious wines. Dave gave us a presentation that was informative, interesting and amusing. We left feeling happy, educated and respected. And we sent wine home! Thank you Burgess Families. We wish you continued success.

Amazing small place. Great tasting rooms. The key to this place is that everyone who is there, wants to be there. It is a little out of the way but really not more than 10 min from the beaten path of the napa valley. Love it.

I enjoy each trip to Burgess Cellars more than the last! The views from the mountain are spectacular and the atmosphere is intimate and casual. The wines are incredible; layered flavors/aromas that showcase the quality of the fruit and the talents of the winemaker. The tastings are also some of the most generous I've had in terms of breadth of wines covered for the price.

Beautiful view and impressive site. We liked the family owned and run aspect, which we much prefer to the pretentious, over-priced, commercialized wineries. The wines were good and our hostess extremely friendly and knowledgeable. Would recommend this to anyone interested in experiencing what it used to feel like to go wine tasting in Napa.

This is an excellent winery. All, and I mean all, of their wines are outstanding. You truly notice the detail, craftsmanship, experience, and attention to detail in their wines. The presentation and personal level of greeting and telling the background of the winery is very inviting. In case you want to experience wine tasting, and not "just an event", then make an appointment with Burgess.

Walking up to the property the views were breathtaking. Burgess has an immediate ambiance advantage because of the scenic surroundings. We were greeted by Francesca, who warmed us with her genuine passion for Burgess Cellars, and shared her knowledge of the Burgess way of making delectable wines. The tasting was amazing.

Our host was new. She was on day 4 and was MOST EXCELLENT. Very informative and she just wasn't reading from a script. Towards the end of our visit Steve Burgess dropped by for a visit and chat. What a treat. He took time to answer questions and share some genuine stories of his families winery beginnings. I had two first time guest with us too. Made their experience even more memorable.

The views from Burgess are spectacular but so it the staff and wine! You can tell they are passionate about what they do. It is very relaxed (none of that Napa snootiness you sometimes get). The regular tasting room is small but nice (splurge on the mountainview tasting if you can - nice private room room with large table and huge windows that overlook the valley, mountains and reservoir).

Burgess Cellars was my best experience in Napa. I went to the popular wineries and they were great as well but nothing like the personal feeling we experienced at Burgess. Our host Marvin was awesome, he really knew his history of the winery and by far was so accommodating he felt like “home” The wines tasted of great quality. Thanks to Burgess and Marvin for making my Napa experience unforgettable

Wonderful to see that a slice of the old Napa valley still exists. A family that still farms the land, makes the wine, and appreciates the customer. Our tasting was led by a knowledgeable sommelier, while owner Steve Burgess made the rounds and offered insight and answered questions. An A+ stop for those wanting to escape the hwy 29 jam.
