About Charles Krug Winery

Located in the original 1872 Redwood Cellar, the Charles Krug hospitality center melds rich history with warm, contemporary visitor experience.

Designed by renowned architect, Howard Backen, of Backen, Gillam and Kroeger, the renovated Redwood Cellar showcases the grand scale of the building while preserving the patina of time with steel beams, wooden posts and re-purposed redwood wiall finishes taken from the production tanks that formerly occupied the space. Stone and shot Crete walls and the original concrete floor add to the sense of history evident in the room. A grand entrance reveals the open tasting space for visitors and arched glass windows that view into the reserve barrel room where one remaining redwood tank with its original glass pipes stands in the corner. In the center of the hospitality center, the building's scale comes into view with an opening to the mezzanine space, used for events and private venues for winery guests and club members.

A tasting bar and trattoria (opening Spring 2014) anchors the main space with ample room at the tasting bar and high and low metal tables and chairs creating a comfortable seating with a modern, contemporary feel. A steel and glass elevator linking the main floor with the mezzanine separates the hospitality center and reserve barrel room while tying the historic space together. Behind the long tasting bar, topped with fir timbers repurposed during the renovation, is a wall of wine amid the warm redwood wall finishes.

A library room in the north corner is anchored with a temperature-controlled reserve cellar, showcasing vintages of Charles Krug Winery wines dating back to the 1940's with a long table for private group tastings. A walk up the stairway to the mezzanine exposes the building's original 18-inch think stone walls.

The hospitality center is open daily from 10:30am to 5pm with walk-ins and by appointment tours and tastings available throughout the day.

Despite the recent renovations, the facility had a "cold," dark feel to it and did not seem particularly inviting. Our tasting host was friendly, but another host kept chatting with her while she was serving us - a bit unprofessional. When speaking with us, our host was pushy on trying to sell the wine club. We also felt rushed even though there weren't many visitors. The wines were great, though!

First, let me say we are wine club members at Charles Krug, and STAY members because of the wonderful group of people that make up this family winery, and of course the FABULOUS wines. We are certainly big fans of Napa cabs, and Krug does them superbly. This was my husband's first time (my second) visiting the new tasting room- gorgeous! It is large yet cozy and inviting. PS: Candice is awesome

Charles Krug Barrel Tasting on 12/14/14 2:00 PM

My wife and I had always passed by Charles Krug and decided to try it out. We are always interest in trying new places and thought we would put this one on this tasting route. First let me say, the winery is beautiful. The wine was Ok and for the price, it was great. Unfortunately the sommelier treated us like we had never been wine tasting before. Probably would not go back.

This was our worst experience all week. Upon arrival noticed there were zero cars in parking area. We were informed we had to stand (not sit) at the bar inside. We wanted a tour and a tasting. Received only tasting, no tour, guide did not know wine but had just moved to the area. We viewed this experience as a total rip off. Do not go to Charles Krug Winery! We will no longer buy Krug Wine!

Charles Krug should be your first winery tour while visiting the wine country. I enjoyed the personal attention that everyone on staff gave us. They made my wife and I feel special and not just another couple on a tour. We can't wait to get back to the California to visit Charles Krug again.

We had a great tour with Rebecca. We were surprised that on a Saturday in mid-July the three of us were given a private tour. This tour focused on the Charles Krug winery and their wines, not wine making in general. For us, this was a positive thing because we already knew the basics. The tour included 4 tasting stops: the foyer and garden, barrel tasting, reserve tasting, and library tasting.

We had a truly delightful experience with our hostess who took the time to understand our likes/dislikes and to walk us through the many Krug wines to find the right ones for us.

Wow, the new tasting room is beautiful! I hadn't been to Charles Krug in years, but I am very glad we visited again. It is a complete transformation. I love the rustic wine country decor, it is very welcoming but luxurious at the same time. The wines were fantastic, a really great value for St. Helena. We had such a great experience that we decided to join the club. We will be back

One woman working the floor. She was on her own and doing her best but it took almost an hour for our tastings. Wines were eh. Nice room but very dark on a beautiful, sunny day. Better for a rainy day.

I really enjoyed visiting Charles Krug. The new tasting room in the Redwood Cellar is beautiful. The tasting room staff was very friendly and told us a lot about this history of the winery and the Mondavi family. All of the wines are quite tasty. My favorite was the Sauvignon Blanc, which is surprising given that I'm not a huge fan of white wine in general; it was just so tasty!
